The search begins...

I am so excited to get Jacob a bike for his birthday. It might be a belated birthday gift, saved until after we move, but maybe not. I am getting tired of the beastly thing we have him riding now. That is--I'm getting tired of bending over to give him a push while also pulling Sam in the wagon or helping him steer his little push car. My back needs a break! Besides, those big chunky wheels make for awkward manuevering and slow-going when compared to the sleek design of the balance bike! And which would a little boy enjoy? So, this has been my obsession of the day (to take my mind off tomorrow's Match Day results). I first saw the balance bike in a "Sky Mall" magazine, and then again on a clip from Elmo's World. Apparently, balance bikes take the place of trikes and training wheels in Europe. Most are manufactured there (like this one from the UK), but there are a some in the US.

Anyone interested? Boot Scoots make a cute one--they are actually based in Utah! Kinderbike is another US based company, or at least it ships from Colorado. Skuut is the more common wooden bike that I first saw, but don't really like the look of now.

These look like so much fun--what do you guys think? Among the opinions I read online was one who suggested just removing pedals from a normal bike and replacing them with pegs. Thats logical, I admit. More economical too. Aaron's all for removing pedals. But another replied that on bikes today (at least on their bikes) the pedals were part of the axel and couldn't be removed. At this point, I wouldn't know. I haven't gotten up close to a real bike to check out how easily it could be taken apart. Though now that I think about it, that might be fun too. I took apart our hand mixer last week. Then plugged it in again just to see all the gears spin like crazy. It was pretty cool. (The first time I turned it on though, I went too high and it jumped off the counter!) It was broken anyway, the beaters kept jamming. Thats what made me decide to disect it. Speaking of, does anyone know a good use for a hand mixer motor? There has got to be something I can make with it. I'm holding onto it, just in case.

I've never heard of them before, but they look like alot of fun.
I thought the boot scoot cruiser was cute. Where do you find the one you have pictured on your blog?We would be happy to get one of your choice for Jacob's birthday.
